Ecstatic to shout from the internet rooftops that I have an album coming out in less than a month! Onze Pedras will hit the world on September 14th, 2010. I think I’m safe in saying that I’ve never worked on anything so intensely in my life.

I collaborated with seven of my favorite musicians on the planet, recording in New York, Tokyo, Dallas, and Chicago. I also had the incredible good fortune to record and mix with John McEntire on the hallowed grounds of Soma Studios. I’ve been so influenced by John’s legacy, it was dream come true to work with him. Likewise, there are so many gifted people that played on Onze Pedras that it’s difficult to know where to begin in conveying my respect and thanks.

David Daniell – electric guitar
Nori Tanaka – drums & hand percussion
Matt Leer – electric guitar, baritone guitar, electronics, & synthesizer
Jaimie Branch – trumpet
Antonio Carella – electric guitar
Bob Jones – viola & double bass
Daniel Huffman – electronics

It was a true pleasure to work with this talented group of friends. They offered an immense sonic palette to work with, and I really appreciate their trust in letting me chase that soundtrack in my head.

I should give a huge shout out to Tall Corn Records for all their support and vigilance. There is no way that Onze Pedras would have ever been realized without their hard work.

Here’s a list of websites that have reviewed the album or tracks. Many of them also have mp3′s for your listening pleasure. Lord knows, it’s really difficult to write articulately about music so I wanted to say thanks to all these folks for taking the time to listen to the album and write about it. I’ll hopefully add to this list if more reviews come in.

I am sitting in my subletted kitchen in Williamsburg on a Thursday morning. I am surrounded by a ridiculous amount of musical gear as I’ve temporarily converted my kitchen into my sound studio as this is the only room that has a decent table and I left all my furniture in Chicago. I’m listening to the new Jim O’Rourke album. It’s chilly outside and a little cloudy. I should get up and close the window, but it’s not so cold that I’m actually uncomfortable. I can see the Empire State building out of my window. I need a job. I went to Rockaway Beach on Saturday. It was pretty rad. I am going to Japan in a couple weeks for my dear friend Rai’s wedding. I’m looking forward to this immensely. I want to make some coffee, but I know that I shouldn’t because the caffeine will lift me up and then drop me, hard. I have lost weight. Thinking about going to see Mucca Pazza on Saturday. Life is pretty saturated at the moment. That’s a good thing.

Some Texas jams from my mentor and college roommate Daniel Huffman. He assembled this mix for a radio station in Austin if memory serves me correctly. Have a listen. It’s an idiosyncratic collage of the musical currents flowing around DFW at the moment.

I’m sitting on my friend’s couch in the Paris suburbs. I just spent a month in Mali. It was the most rewarding and difficult trip I have ever taken.

Musically, Mali was completely overwhelming. I’m so eager to write about all I heard. I hope I can do justice to the richness and variety of the musical culture there. Maybe I should simply start by saying that music is omnipresent in Mali. Whether it be radios or mp3s from the little speakers on people’s phones, there is a constant flow of sound everywhere you go. There is an emphasis on Malian music, but one also hears a decent amount of reggae and current American R&B. One of the things that surprised me the most about this onslaught of music was how abstract much of the music seemed to be. Most of the music I had heard from Mali before going there had a strong emphasis on melody. That taste for melody is still there, but it is pushed to the precipice constantly. The result of this, at least for me, was hypnotic… dream like, and as you might guess, not particularly easy to write about.

I had the good fortune to connect with a musician in Mali named Jah Youssouf. His family and friends showed me such kindness. Their generosity really shaped my time there.

I’m also delighted to report that I was able to record a lot of music by Jah and his wife Bintou. I hope to be able to assemble a proper album from that material to help him put out a CD in the States. I’d like to introduce their music to a wider audience, and provide them with some degree of financial stability since Jah and his family live on very meager means.

I’ve got two important gigs this month. Very proud to announce I’ve got my record release party for my Lobisomem EP at the Empty Bottle on June 30th! I haven’t played live in a long time. I’m pretty geeked/scared. The Empty Bottle graciously let me curate the evening so I can promise quality jams all night long. Please come out and pick up a copy of my Brightest Solids -EP while you’re at it.

Happy New Year! Hope 2008 is a good one for you. At the moment, I’m watching Barack Obama speak on the television after his victory in the Iowa caucuses. 2008 is starting out really well! I’m a huge Obama fan. Delighted to think what changes he may bring if he were to win the Presidency.

I used to curate a music series here in Chicago with my buddy Raichiro Iijima at the old venue 3030. It was called Impetus Concert Series. The idea behind it was that we’d get artists to submit unreleased music and give it out on complimentary CDRs the night they would perform. It was super fun, and I was really proud of the shows we put together.

I never really thought about there being a connection between what I’ve done on Bird & Whale and what Rai and I did with the Impetus Concert Series until recently. But, once again, I find myself trying to pull together music. Of course this time it’s on the web as opposed to an actual venue. I’m afraid there’s still a lot of bugging my friends to either produce or just come and listen. The association to Impetus seems particularly appropriate with the posting of these two mixes.[Editor's note: I broke these two mixes into different posts with the new format but you can find Kate's mix here.] Daniel and Kate’s mixes are very different, but it’s just the sort of juxtaposition that I adore in music. They really compliment one another well and make you more aware of how each approach the music they chose and music in general.

Kate Simko is a super talented and prolific producer and DJ from Chicago. Delighted to have her talents represented here on the site. She travels all over world with her music. Each trip to Berlin or Santiago makes me more envious. Her DJ set is a live recording she did in Philly a few months ago. Its orbit is all electronic. To hear more of her music please visit her site http://katesimko.com/.

Daniel Huffman (aka Frogboy) is an old friend of mine from Texas. We lived together in Denton and went to art school together back in the day. He’s the one that really opened my ears to a broader range of music, and I blame him for the total obsession that followed. It didn’t feel right to have a collection of mixes without Mr. Huffman on board so I’m really happy he was able to put together a mix. Also to give credit where it’s due and regress ever so slightly, I should also mention that the premise of the Impetus Concert Series (to give out CDRs the night of the show) was Daniel’s idea. Daniel has played in a ton of different bands over the years. You can hear his solo project, Frogboy, here.
