Riding on the train on my way to the Dream House to meet up with Lil Hermano. Listening to this here The Diamond Age mix. I think he’s struck gold (again) on this one. A good mix of melodic psychedelia and kraut rock jams that all feel very alive and relevant. I didn’t know I was waiting for these sounds, but suddenly here they are.

I’ve been meditating a little lately on what role music functions in my life. Splitting my time between the harsh realities of what it takes to make a living through music and the dream of immersion. I haven’t been able to find steady work since I got to NYC so I’ve sort of turned to music out of necessity and/or morbid curiosity. The nightmare of booking and record distribution alone are enough to crush even the most optimistic soul, yet here I am wading through it all. I guess at the end of the day, there’s something sort of sacred and essential there.

I have lots of Lobisomem related good news:
A few cool Lobisomem remixes have made their debut this week. Please check ‘em out.
DJ /rupture & Chief Boima:
http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2010/09/shes-made-clay-remix-dj-rupture-
Clive Tanaka:
http://www.internationaltapes.com/reviews/lobisomem-shes-made-of-clay-clive-tanaka-remix/

Some other great remixes also on their way.

I’ve been running around to record stores in NYC seeing if they’ll carry my new Lobisomem record. For the most part it’s been a positive experience. It’s really nice when stores will just buy the records outright. I will however admit to being really disappointed with a couple of my favorite record stores: Other Music and Turntable Lab. They seem to be so apprehensive to support emerging artists. I guess that’s a sign of the times. Bird & Whale gives away free music after all.
But yeah, I would strongly encourage you to keep the dream alive and support the following record stores (and emerging artists) where you should be able to find my new record, Onze Pedras:

Manhattan:
Kim’s Video & Music
Academy LPs
Good Records

Brooklyn:
Academy Record Annex
Halcyon

Chicago:
Reckless Records (Milwaukee Ave.)
Laurie’s Planet of Sound

Dallas:
Good Records

Austin:
End of an Ear

Lawrence, KS:
Love Garden Sounds

Minneapolis:
Electric Fetus

Tilburg, Netherlands:
Antenne Recordshop

If you know any other record stores that might be into stocking my tunes, please let me know. Likewise, if you visit any of these stores and they don’t have my record in stock please let me know.

<del datetime="2010-09-27T19:32:09+00:00">Happy to report I’m going to be playing a solo Lobisomem show at the Beauty Bar in Chicago on Tuesday, October 14, 2010</del>. (That show fell through. Waiting to hear about something else.) Super excited to share some new material with all my Chicago friends. I feel like my live show has come along way in the last year (lots of time spent thinking about how to make laptop jams come alive), so yeah it should be fun.
Also I’m going to be playing another solo show at Zebulon with Jason Ajemian’s Highlife and Woody Sullender on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Should be a great night of music. The Highlife put on one of the better shows I’ve seen in while. Mercurial Appalachian jazz compositions that seem to fold space. I have never seen Woody Sullender live but his recordings are sublime, and I have no doubt he will offer more of the same in person.

Ecstatic to shout from the internet rooftops that I have an album coming out in less than a month! Onze Pedras will hit the world on September 14th, 2010. I think I’m safe in saying that I’ve never worked on anything so intensely in my life.

I collaborated with seven of my favorite musicians on the planet, recording in New York, Tokyo, Dallas, and Chicago. I also had the incredible good fortune to record and mix with John McEntire on the hallowed grounds of Soma Studios. I’ve been so influenced by John’s legacy, it was dream come true to work with him. Likewise, there are so many gifted people that played on Onze Pedras that it’s difficult to know where to begin in conveying my respect and thanks.

David Daniell – electric guitar
Nori Tanaka – drums & hand percussion
Matt Leer – electric guitar, baritone guitar, electronics, & synthesizer
Jaimie Branch – trumpet
Antonio Carella – electric guitar
Bob Jones – viola & double bass
Daniel Huffman – electronics

It was a true pleasure to work with this talented group of friends. They offered an immense sonic palette to work with, and I really appreciate their trust in letting me chase that soundtrack in my head.

I should give a huge shout out to Tall Corn Records for all their support and vigilance. There is no way that Onze Pedras would have ever been realized without their hard work.

Here’s a list of websites that have reviewed the album or tracks. Many of them also have mp3′s for your listening pleasure. Lord knows, it’s really difficult to write articulately about music so I wanted to say thanks to all these folks for taking the time to listen to the album and write about it. I’ll hopefully add to this list if more reviews come in.

One is here in Brooklyn, and the other is in Dallas. Both nights are gonna feature Reggae music so I thought it might be a good opportunity to share some thoughts on Reggae that have been bouncing around in my head for a while now.

I feel like a lot of folks don’t “get” Reggae, but I really believe that it is one of the most compelling musical forms to hit planet Earth in the last century. It is a unique amalgam of Caribbean, African, and European rhythms and melodies. When listening to Reggae one can hear the musicians summoning the whole of those various musical cultures and melding them together so succinctly. On top of that, and this is the kicker, you had hundreds of musicians in on this tiny little island (4,444 square miles to be exact) in the 60′s and 70′s who had all mastered that melding. That melding became the baseline – the standard. So, then they did something truly magnificent and somehow collectively pushed each other even further. And as if that wasn’t enough, then you had the genesis of the entire DJ culture and the fascinating advent of “studio as musician” with the introduction of technology to capture and more importantly manipulate sound. Perhaps it’s easy to take all that for granted if you’re under fifty or for it to go over your head if you’re over fifty, but I can’t stress enough how significant this movement was/is to human’s relationship to music and sound.

So yeah, I hope you’ll come out if you live in NYC or Dallas. Dance a little bit and rejoice in that revolution in sound. Although if nobody shows up to Matt’s night in Dallas that will just be one more arrow in my quiver proving that he should move to NYC.
